The director of the Covenant University Central Instrumentation Research Facility (CUCIRF), Professor Akan Williams has initiated the process of ISO 17025 accreditation for the facility. The journey toward achieving this accreditation officially commenced with the recent visit of MASPAN, a leading management system consultancy in Nigeria, to the facility, marking a significant milestone in our commitment to enhancing the quality and reliability of our laboratory operations. During their preliminary visit, the MASPAN team began the rigorous process with a summarized gap analysis, a crucial first step in identifying areas that require improvement to align with the ISO/IEC 17025:2017 standard. This assessment provides valuable insights into our current practices, helping to streamline processes, improve technical competency, and ensure that all testing and calibration activities meet international benchmarks. ISO/IEC 17025:2017 is the globally recognized standard for testing and calibration laboratories, ensuring the accuracy, reliability, and validity of test results. Achieving this certification demonstrates our commitment to quality assurance, continuous improvement, and customer satisfaction. It also positions our facility as a leader in compliance with international best practices. With MASPAN’s expertise and guidance, we are hopeful that our facility will be on a structured path towards full compliance with ISO/IEC 17025:2017. The consultancy will provide support through detailed assessment reports outlining necessary improvements, training programs to enhance staff competency, implementation of best practices to meet standard requirements and internal audits and corrective actions to prepare for final accreditation. The accreditation of our facility will reaffirm our mission to provide trustworthy, high-quality testing and calibration services that meet both national and international expectations.

Covenant University And The Carnegie Fellowship: A Milestone in Scientific Advancement

The Medicinal Chemistry Short Course, organized under the prestigious Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program, has successfully concluded after five weeks of intensive learning and hands-on training. The course provided a comprehensive exploration into Medicinal Chemistry, equipping participants with theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for academic and professional growth. The program was hosted at Covenant University under the leadership of Professor Akan Williams, with Landmark University as a key partner. The course ran twice weekly over four weeks, with a hybrid learning format to enhance accessibility and participation. The first two weeks were held at Landmark University, while sessions at Covenant University (CU) were streamed online. This arrangement was reversed in the final two weeks, ensuring that students at both institutions benefited from in-person and virtual engagement. Participants came from various academic backgrounds in the sciences, creating a diverse and enriching learning environment. A key component of the course was the four-day practical session focused on drug inhibition studies using the broth microdilution method. This session, attended by about 30 students, provided hands-on experience in laboratory techniques crucial for antimicrobial research, reinforcing theoretical knowledge through real-world applications. The Carnegie Fellow – Associate Professor Oluseye Onajole was assisted by Mrs Ruth Diji-Geske, a microbiologist, who provided detailed explanations on broth preparation and the subculture of the organisms used, ensuring that participants gained a thorough understanding of the process. The course primarily focused on drug formulation and synthesis, providing participants with a strong foundation in the principles and techniques involved in developing medicinal compounds. Through detailed theoretical sessions and practical demonstrations, students were equipped with essential skills to understand and design effective pharmaceutical formulations. To monitor progress and reinforce learning, weekly exams and assignments were conducted. Additionally, students received free academic mentorship across various disciplines, ensuring well-rounded academic and professional development. A one-day seminar was organized as part of the program, offering valuable insights to participants and researchers on how to improve their academic and research endeavours. This seminar was facilitated by Professor Oluwafemi from The University of Johannesburg, Professor Olayinka Ajani, Asso. Prof. Oluseye Onajole, and Professor Akan Williams, it served as a platform for knowledge exchange and networking among scholars. The course concluded with an oral presentation session, where participants who achieved at least 75% attendance demonstrated their understanding of key concepts. The hard work and dedication of these participants were recognized with the award of three certificates marking a significant achievement in their academic journey. The certificates awarded include Introduction to Medicinal Chemistry, Broth Microdilution Method, and Advanced Medicinal Chemistry.Furthermore, plans are underway at Covenant University to introduce Medicinal Chemistry as a Master’s degree course, further strengthening academic and research opportunities in this field. The successful completion of this program underscores the commitment of the Carnegie Fellowship for Africans in the Diaspora to fostering educational excellence and skill development. This initiative was made possible through the leadership and dedication of Professor Williams, the CUCIRF Director, who played a key role in bringing this program to fruition. CUCIRF Director Launches Short Course in Medicinal Chemistry

The Director of the Covenant University Central Instrumentation Research Facility, Professor Akan Bassey Williams has initiated a ground-breaking short course certificate program in Medicinal Chemistry, aiming to eventually propose its elevation to a full-fledged Master’s degree course. This forward-thinking initiative underscores Prof Williams’ dedication to advancing knowledge and professional development opportunities. The six-week course commenced on the 9th of January 2025, drawing an impressive attendance of over 60 participants, with an additional 20 individuals expressing interest in the program. This overwhelming response reflects the significance and appeal of the subject matter. Participants have lauded the course for its robust and engaging content, which seamlessly blends theoretical insights with practical applications. This initiative through the director of CUCIRF greatly enhances the academic contributions of the facility to Covenant University and also positions it as a pioneer in Medicinal Chemistry and a hub for cutting-edge knowledge in this area. The course is led by a distinguished visiting lecturer from Roosevelt University, USA, Dr. Oluseye Onajole whose expertise has greatly enriched the learning experience. Lectures are conducted at Covenant University, in the CUCIRF and the Post Graduate seminar rooms respectively, and also at our sister institution Landmark University – Omu Aran, fostering a collaborative and dynamic educational environment. We look forward to seeing this program grow and evolve into a Master’s degree offering, further expanding the University’s academic delivery as a global frontline.

CUCIRF Goes a Notch Higher With Business Consultation

As part of its ongoing efforts to optimize the utilization of its state-of-the-art equipment and maximize profitability, CUCIRF recently welcomed a distinguished business consultant – Mr. Prince Collins Ezeiruaku through the help of the Covenant Applied Informatics and Communication Africa Centre of Excellence (CApIC-ACE) leadership for a business review. Mr Ezeiruaku is from the International Trade Facilitation Association, ITFA, Canada. During the visit, an extensive meeting was held between the consultant, the director of CUCIRF, and the CApICE- ACE team. The session provided a platform for in-depth discussions, where key operational matters were deliberated, and pertinent questions were raised and addressed by both parties. Topics ranged from streamlining processes to exploring innovative revenue-generation strategies that align with the facility’s mission and capabilities. The exchange of ideas during the meeting laid the groundwork for actionable plans aimed at enhancing the facility’s financial sustainability while continuing to serve the academic and research community effectively. This strategic engagement marks the success drive of CUCIRF’s new director, Prof. Akan Williams, and defines the facility’s commitment to ensuring sustainable growth and operational excellence. Newly Appointed DVC Pays Courtesy Visit to CUCIRF

The Covenant University Central Instrumentation Research Facility (CUCIRF) was honoured to host the University’s newly appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Lanre Amodu during his recent courtesy visit. Although brief, the visit marked a significant moment as the DVC expressed both keen interest and satisfaction with the state of the facility. Upon his arrival, Prof. Lanre Amodu was warmly received by the Director of the facility, Professor Akan Williams and the CUCIRF team. During the visit, the Director provided an overview of the facility’s operations, detailing its itineraries and its contributions to the University’s academic and research excellence. The DVC commended the facility for maintaining high standards and promised to support its visibility within and beyond the University community. He highlighted the need for proactive steps to ensure the facility gains the recognition it deserves, suggesting that the webmaster elevate the facility’s webpage to a prominent position on the University’s website. “Such a vital hub of innovation must have a strong online presence,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of moving beyond the current “quick link” placement. In his closing remarks, the DVC promised to revisit the facility for a more detailed engagement. The Registrar expressed her admiration for the upkeep of the facility and praised the management team for maintaining its functionality and standards. Recognizing the facility’s critical role in driving research and innovation, she pledged to support its growth and address pressing infrastructure needs. During her visit, the Registrar commended the team for their dedication to sustaining the operational efficiency of the facility. She noted the importance of such a resource in supporting the University’s research ecosystem and ensuring that both staff and students have access to world-class tools. On November 29th, 2024, we bid farewell to our outgoing director – Professor Olayinka O. Ajani, who completed a commendable two-year tenure, and warmly welcomed our new director, who has already begun to inspire hope for the future of the facility. A deep commitment to continuity and progress defined the outgoing director’s tenure. Building on the foundation laid by his predecessor, he focused on advancing the CUCIRF’s aspirations for excellence by initiating discussions on ISO accreditation. This critical step underscored his dedication to maintaining the highest standards and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. His steady leadership ensured that the organization remained on a growth trajectory, paving the way for the achievements yet to come. With the baton now passed, our new director – Professor Akan Bassey Williams assumed duties immediately on the same day. In just a short period, we can already observe meaningful improvements in our processes, signalling a dynamic and results-oriented approach to leadership. This fresh perspective is invigorating for all of us, as it reinforces our collective belief in the facility’s potential to reach new heights under his guidance. CUCIRF Successfully Complete Its First GCMS Hands-On Student Training

We are delighted to announce the successful completion of our first-ever hands-on student training program on Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GCMS), which took place from December 4th to 6th, 2024. The three-day training session proved to be an engaging and impactful experience, providing students with both theoretical insights and practical skills. Participants immersed themselves in the fundamentals of GCMS and its real-world applications through robust training exercises led by our experienced facilitators. The training presentation session was facilitated by Mrs. Ruth Diji-geske – Head of Quality Assurance and Lab Analyst, while the hands-on was facilitated by Mr. Kayode Bisi-felix. Other members of the facility which include the director – Professor Akan Williams, The Lab Head – Mr. Ogunleye Olatunde, and the Administrative Officer – Mrs. Gift Madu all played crucial roles in ensuring the smooth sailing of the three-day training. To measure the program’s effectiveness, pre- and post-assessment tests were conducted. The results highlighted significant improvement in the students’ understanding of GCMS concepts, demonstrating the success of the training in enhancing their technical competence. Student feedback, collected through a structured survey, was overwhelmingly positive. Participants commended the clarity of instruction, the interactive nature of the sessions, and the opportunity to engage with advanced equipment. Many described the training as highly beneficial, noting that it effectively bridged the gap between theoretical learning and practical application. The success of this training marks a significant milestone for our facility as we continue to expand opportunities for skill development in advanced analytical techniques.
